What is 'Waiata Home'?
a compass
&
a painting journey
Waiata Home is a painting journey designed for you to access your inner compass - 'Waiata Home' 'Waiata Home' is an expression of the wisdom that thrums within all of us. When your Waiata/song is clearly thruming through your body, this is what we call home. And from a place of home, your bodies songs can function as a compass, assisting you to orient and navigate this life, relationships, purpose and decisions. Waiata is not of us, but comes through us - always present in the collective field. This Waiata carries, weaves, and aligns the wisdom, memories, ancestors, love, principles and resilience you already hold within. And yet, the oppressive social norms of this world (families and institutions) has been designed to silence this wisdom, our Waiata, by shutting down access to our own body. And still, its imprints are embedded us, resonating with rhythms and sensations. Reconnecting with these rhythms & sensations is a practice that hones the clarity of your compass. And, to do so in community is to navigate in right-relationship with mana and integrity.
Each painting journey offers a powerful 8-step guided painting experience that invites a gentle, fun, & sustainable way to: - invite repair, re-member, re-stor(y), & re-center - experience & express your emotions and body sensations - introduce practices of noticing and settling your nervous system - decreasing stress activation, and diminishing stress load over time - identify & contain trauma's for 1:1 attention and care - unbind your innate imagination and creativity - create something lasting - your painting - that is both beautiful and meaningful to you. This experience is truly a journey - a tuning process that can re-set your nervous system and relationships within your body+field. Creating in such intentional ways reveals the healing power of art and the ancient community practice of people coming together - to celebrate and support each other.
who is this painting journey for?
This painting journey is for those who wish to come together, heal that which is ready to heal, and enjoy creative and somatic practices that can re-wire habitual and inherited ways. Here, you are invited to know and love yourself deeper - so that you may live into this life shining with more joy, creative play and integrity. We, at SENSE8, are supported by the idea/frame that there are at least four core emergent elements that enable a person to live a fulfilling and more joyful life while participating in community with integrity & alignment. These elements are: 1) Know Thyself. Know your emotions, sensations, behaviors, stories & lineages, gifts & shadows. Know yourself clearly with compassion, unconditional love & grace. 2) Adopt, test, and live by chosen frameworks that center all people. Here at Sense8 we are living into Transformative Justice frameworks and apply decolonizing and re-indigenizing methods personally and professionally. 3) Develop the skills and knowledge of observation, and when possible interfere with oppressive social norms and structures. 4) Develop and practice in the imaginarium - the space in which we co-create better ways of being. This workshop attunes to the first core element - within a larger framework of cultural rigor & humility. We live in a time of reveal. Witnessing and experiencing harm through governments & institutions that should & could know and do better, rampant corporate greed, and war. Global and local crises are real. The needs of our family and whanau are vital. And, we too often forget to tend or be tended in our own care. This journey and workshop is for you.

Journey
YOUR GUIDED PAINTING
Let's start by saying: You do not need any prior painting experience.
All bodies bring their own wisdom and ways of moving with the archetypal energies of the feminine & masculine, shadow & light.
This journey is one of bravely daring to put brush to canvas and practice listening to the rhythms of your body, feeling your emotions, sensations & movements.
Painting is a powerful form of self-expression and a beautiful way to deeper self-knowledge.
This kind of journey can also be intimidating especially when we are caught up in our heads with judgements.
In the Waiata Home painting journey you will quickly learn that you have arrived in a container of care & celebration. Where your facilitator is trained to guide in shadows and light. Here you are not alone, we do this together. This is a brave space where it is known that every body has a waiata that sings of home. Every body holds their own agency & sovereignty. Every body is on their own journey. Every body is invested in the experience, and every body has the capacity to connect with their inner artist & inner being. Including YOU.
The painting journey's offered guidance and prompts are intended to invite and empower you to unlock your inner wisdom and creativity. How each of our bodies do this is part of our unique waiata/song.

Who teaches
Your Guide
Dr. Emma J Coddington Brown is an ocean nomad, raised in Bulls, Aotearoa, by Alison & Nigel and a large extended whanau, Rangitikei River, Mt Tongariro & Ruahines. She has spent the last 27 years living and training, professoring and creating, healing and learning with wise folks in the Islands & Pacific Ocean (VASA), Nth and Sth America, Africa (sp. Kenya, Morrocco, and South Africa), and a wee bit in Europe (Italy & Ireland). The question that has called her through this life: How do the forces of stress AND love organize our bodies, relationships, organizations and communities? Once a neuroscience-physiology researcher and teacher in traditional (elite) universities, she is now called to work with people through movement, therapeutic practices and creative imagination and form. In private 1:1 sessions and group journeys, Emma listens to the field and people's needs - and flexibly combines inquirys with color, culture, geeky neuroscience stuff, somatic movements, paint & canvas. Our approach is akin to weaving - assisting each of you to find the foundations and patterns of your own unique ways of being. Develop practices that invite you to listen and discern your inner wisdom & compass, and therefore how to dance and shuffle in right relationship - with honor, discernment and integrity. Emma commits to holding each of your diverse sense of agency and sovereignty as paramount and attends to co-created agreements by which we gather in a group and enjoy. The intention is to hold a safe space in which we can all bravely show up. This does not promise that we will be comfy all the time - but it does commit to each of your intentions and growth at the same time as attending to community coherence. In workshops and painting journey's, each of you will have a very private experience, that (if you choose to share) can be witnessed by those in the room with you - amplifying the 'ahah' realizations that emerge when painting in layers (as we do). In group, you are invited to deepen your capacity to witness - learning how to better notice and listen to each other, and being fully witnessed ourselves - we are practicing ways of being in relationship and community. This approach has changed her/their own life and that of countless beings around the world. Emma brings home her skills, knowledge, and practices as an atypical Neuroscientist, Psychosomatic Practitioner (The Resilience Toolkit® ), Shamanic practices, Guided Drawing®, and Intentional Creativity® Practitioner & Teacher (iMusea University). Emma has more than 30 years of experience curating shared and brave spaces for learning & personal work in groups. She began as a non-traditional scientist working to decolonize neuroscience, physiology and biology classrooms. The most recent iteration of these brave spaces has been in offerings to 1:1 private sessions, group journeys like this one (Waiata Home), and cultural coaching (mostly to science institutions and schools). Typically, Emma prefers to collaborate with other facilitators when offering group journeys in Nth America - this time home she will be on her own supported by her mum, Ali Russell, brothers Patrick & James, father Nigel, and all the aunties and uncles, cuzzies & chosen whanau. She offers a powerful combination of approach + system + framework, offering tangible creative practices that reignite your spirit and energies. While acknowledging and honoring the diverse lived experiences and ways our bodies are influenced by the world around us.
Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa.
Soooo looking forward to being with you as we gather to boost our heart fields and paint into reconnecting our bodies, spirits, relations and minds.
In a time of necessary social restructuring towards equity with cultural diversity, global climate changes, and subsequent rapid and unpredictable challenges to living & relating ........
let's gather to re-member and re-imagine
how we might also live into & from
our innate waiata mana.
Re-awaken our cellular & relational rhythms of home,
and fall in love with yourself.
Here's to finding the AND.

There comes a time in the life of a woman
When she unabashedly and boldly occupies her ultimate sovereignty
When she finally feels ready to claim her space in the world
And when she redefines compassion as unequivocal self-love
